    Research Laboratory Engineer: General Engineering Support

    The Center for Limb Loss and MoBility (CLiMB) at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington, in Seattle, WA have an opening for a research laboratory engineer. This position is available immediately and will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found. The Center is mixture of engineers, clinicians, biomechanists, and epidemiologists who develop and conduct research to preserve and enhance the mobility of veterans with lower limb musculoskeletal impairment or limb loss. The successful candidate will serve as the primary engineer for annual maintenance, calibration, and training for a wide variety of Center hardware resources.

    The research areas that will be supported by this position include the Biplane Fluoroscopy Laboratory, the Motion Analysis Laboratory, and the Biomechanical Testing Laboratory. The Center also has a Tissue Analysis Laboratory, a 3D Printing Core, and a Machine Shop. This position will be responsible for both hardware and software aspects of a custom biplane fluoroscopy system, a conebeam CT scanner, several retro-reflective motion analysis systems, a hexapod robot, a suite of linear actuators, several materials testing machines, a c-arm, a freezer farm, multiple forces plates, several pressure mats and in-shoe pressure measurement devices, two treadmills, and various other custom laboratory devices. This engineer will be expected to also maintain the Center data servers and finite elements clusters. There is also the potential in the future for writing custom software for various imaging analysis packages. Note: training will be available for all of these equipment and it is not expected that the candidate will have the necessary experience a priori. Over time, this position will become a Center resource and eventually, will train new team members how to use the equipment.

    Requirements: The successful candidate will have:
    • Experience with the hardware and software used in biomechanics research, ideally with human subject or cadaveric testing
    • Excellent problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
    • Strong competency with the MATLAB programming language (learning/using existing laboratory algorithms and developing new ones)
    • Excellent independence and self-sufficiency (candidate will become the subject matter expert on various facets of the aforementioned equipment)
    • Strong oral and written communication skills as they will be training new users, including updating and generating in-house procedures and manuals.
    • This position requires at minimum BS degree in a relevant engineering discipline and 1+ years of work experience in a related field.

    The annual salary range for this position is approximately $48,000 – $58,000 depending on qualifications.
