    Peri-operative Evaluation of Skeletal Muscles in vivo

    Applications are invited for an exciting fully-funded PhD research at the University of Stuttgart as part of the BMBF-funded research project “3DFoot”.

    The project: 3Dfoot is an interdisciplinary project that involves scientists interested in biomechanics, clinicians, and surgeons. The overall aim of the project is to generate a detailed musculoskeletal foot model. The project combines clinical, peri-operative, structural, and functional aspects of the foot as a musculoskeletal system.

    Research: The focus of this particular research project is on mechanical behavior of skeletal muscles in vivo, in particular, on the behavior of muscles that in ankle joint function. It focuses specifically on assessing the mechanical and histological alterations of skeletal muscles and fascial structures due to neurological diseases. This requires the development of new methodologies for in vivo evaluation of joint torque and muscle forces. The PhD student will be responsible for the design of experiments, the collection of data in the hospital, data analysis and interpretation, and the writing of scientific reports. The candidate will have access to the clinical laboratories in Heidelberg, mechanical instrumentation, electronics, and motion capture laboratories in Stuttgart and all the necessary software for experimental data collection and analysis as well as modeling and simulations.

    The candidate: The ideal candidate will have a
    1. MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering or a comparable degree in a related field
    2. strong interest in experimental research in musculoskeletal biomechanics
    3. excellent analytical, numerical skills, and problem-solving skills
    4. programming skills in Matlab and Labview (experience in motion analysis is an advantage)
    5. very good written and communication skills and fluency in English (German knowledge is an advantage)
    6. self-reliant work attitude in a collaborative environment.

    Pay scale of the position: A 100% TVL13 position.
