  • Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Regenerative Rehabilitation at the Kessler Foundation and Rutgers NJMS

Applications are now being accepted for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Regenerative Rehabilitation in the Spinal Cord Injury Research Department at Kessler Foundation in collaboration with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

The 2-year funded program prepares rehabilitation research and biomedical scientists, including engineers (e.g. biomedical, rehabilitation), neuroscientists, kinesiologists, and those in related fields, for a career in rehabilitation research within the specialty area of Regenerative Rehabilitation.

Regenerative Rehabilitation is the integration of principles and approaches from the fields of rehabilitation science and regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine focuses on the repair or replacement of tissue lost to injury, disease, or age, primarily via the enhancement of endogenous stem cell function or the transplantation of exogenous stem cells. A focus of Rehabilitation science is the use of mechanical and other physical stimuli to promote functional recovery. The objective of the fellowship is to create synergies through the integration of these two approaches with the ultimate goal of optimizing independence and participation of individuals with disabilities, particularly those with spinal cord injury.

The successful candidate will work on ongoing clinical projects investigating regenerative medicine for various musculoskeletal conditions in persons with spinal cord injury and other orthopedic conditions (e.g. soft-tissue trauma, osteoarthritis). The successful applicant will also be expected to develop his/her own mentored research project. He/she will work on various aspects of research projects from inception (e.g., study formulation, grantwriting, etc.), through dissemination (conference presentation and manuscript publication). Opportunities of collaborating with clinicians and scientists on existing or future clinical research are also available. All fellows participate in an extensive training curriculum and didactic offerings. Multidisciplinary-mentored training opportunities are individually tailored to achieve specific goals considering each fellow’s prior background and interests.

Kessler Foundation is a public charity that advances its mission of improving the lives of people with disabilities through research and grant-making programs. Kessler Foundation is affiliated with the renowned Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, New Jersey and enjoys close collaborations with partners at the New Jersey Regenerative Institute, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Rutgers University. Kessler Foundation is one of the few rehabilitation institutions in the United States that has a research dedicated state-of-the-art 3T Siemens MRI system at the Rocco Ortenzio Neuroimaging Center. This offers unique research opportunities and training in imaging.

Qualifying candidates must have an earned doctorate in rehabilitation science, physical/occupational therapy, engineering (e.g. biomedical, rehabilitation), biomechanics, kinesiology, or a related field. Strong candidates will have prior experience in performing research studies in human subjects, as well as some history of publication and presentation of original research. Additional desirable skills and experience include knowledge of statistical data analysis and excellent organizational, writing, and verbal communication skills.

Salary is commensurate with NIH guidelines. Kessler Foundation is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a diverse, cooperative work environment. To apply, please send your CV and a letter of interest to Trevor Dyson-Hudson, MD at tdysonhudson@kesslerfoundation.org and CC Nathan Hogaboom, PhD at nhogaboom@kesslerfoundation.org. Letters of recommended will be requested upon invitation to interview.
