  • Multiple Positions (PhD/postdoc) Available in Rehabilitation Engineering (Washington, DC)

Multiple positions, including PhD and postdoctoral fellow positions, are available to support a just-awarded 5-year grant to establish a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC). This center is funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and will be directed by Dr. Li-Qun Zhang and Dr. Peter Lum. This RERC will focus on Rehabilitation interventions based on accurate assessments with combined home-hospital rehabilitation.

The prime site of this RERC is the University of Maryland, and collaborating institution include the Catholic University of America, the National Rehabilitation Hospital, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and the Veteran Administration Baltimore Medical Center. The current positions will be located in Biomedical Engineering at The Catholic University of America, but the positions will support all aspects of the RERC, including working closely with our collaborating institutions.

The RERC involves six research and development projects, but these positions will specifically support the following two projects:
    1) Upper extremity synergy assessment and treatment after stroke (Peter Lum, lum@cua.edu)
    2) Impairment-based robotic training to restore hand function post-stroke (Sang Wook Lee, leesw@cua.edu)

Candidates with a background in biomechanics, robotics, and rehabilitation science (biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physiology, or other related areas) are encouraged to apply. Desirable skills include competence in robotics, mechatronics, computer programming, motion capture, and machine learning. While any single candidate is not expected to have expertise in all of these areas, experience in some of these areas is preferred.

For questions regarding specific projects, contact the project PIs listed above. Interested individuals should email a letter of interest, CV, and the contact information of three references to leesw@cua.edu.

These positions will remain open until filled.
