Funded Ph.D. Studentship in Movement Science with a focus on Cancer Rehabilitation

There will be 250,000 new patients diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the United States. The treatments used to manage breast cancer have greatly enhanced patient survivorship. However, these same procedures may come at a significant functional cost as patients commonly report shoulder pain, restricted mobility, and difficulty performing activities of daily living. The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Imaging Laboratory at the University of Michigan seeks to better understand the mechanisms driving these impairments in breast cancer patients to develop therapeutic strategies that improve post-operative function in women after mastectomy and breast reconstruction
We are currently seeking a new, fully funded doctoral student in the School of Kinesiology to study the mechanisms and rehabilitation of shoulder impairments in breast cancer survivors, with a particular focus on the effects of surgery and radiation therapy. This project will involve assessments of breast cancer patients and healthy controls using biomechanical, electromyographic, and ultrasound imaging-based measurements.
The student would work under the supervision of Prof. David Lipps, Ph.D., and have the opportunity to collaborate with oncologists at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. This is a particularly exciting time to join our laboratory as we move into a brand new, start-of-the-art building in Winter 2021 with dedicated biomechanics research spaces, clinical suites and training facilities.
Applicants should have a master’s or bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, biomedical engineering, or mechanical engineering. Previous biomechanics research experience, journal publications, and a high GPA from previous academic work are highly desirable. GRE scores are optional. The student will need to gain admittance to the University of Michigan Movement Science doctoral program for Fall 2021.
