The Concussion Research Laboratory at the University of Delaware has an opening for one new Ph.D. student in the Biomechanics and Movement Science (BIOMS) program starting in Fall 2021. The Lab is funded by grants from both the NIH and DoD and our two primary research projects are related to 1) the mechanisms behind the elevated rate of post-concussion musculoskeletal injury with an emphasis on instrumented gait and balance measures and, 2) age of first exposure to collision sports and neurological health across the lifespan. Additional ongoing research studies include gait and balance post-concussion (Motion Capture, Force Plates, and Wearable Acceleromters), neurological assessment in patients with persistent concussion symptoms across the lifespan, and opportunities to be involved in neuroimaging and blood biomarker studies. The concussion research laboratory is well equipped with concussion testing protocols and there are extensive existing collaborations both on-campus with Intercollegiate Athletics, Biomechanics, Physical Therapy, Engineering as well as off-campus with a Pediatric Hospital, Concussion Clinics, as well as local and national physicians groups.
Funding
This research position will be funded either by a research or teaching assistantship. The expended stipend beginning for the Fall 2021 year is $21,000/9 months with possible summer funding ($28,000/12 months).
Admission Criteria:
1) Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), 2) Courses in the areas of calculus, anatomy/physiology, and other lab sciences, 3) prior research experience (e.g., master’s thesis, lab experiences) in health sciences is recommended, 4) and certification/licensure as a health care provider (e.g., AT, PT) is helpful, but not required. GREs are not required for the current admission cycle, but can be submitted if the applicant desires.
