    HJF is seeking a Biomedical Engineer II to support the Department of Defense (DoD) - Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to EACE. US citizenship is required.

    The EACE is a one-of-a-kind organization within the DoD and VA consisting of teams of researchers embedded at the point of care within multiple Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, the research efforts undertaken focus on the mitigation, treatment, and rehabilitation of traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on translating findings into clinical practice to improve the care of injured Service members and Veterans.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Interviews potential subjects for research protocols, validates eligibility to participate, and evaluates commitment. Educates subjects about the research protocol, their roles in the protocols, and any other vital information. Serves as a resource for the subjects.
    2. Responsible for conducting laboratory research with devices such as force platforms, motion capture cameras, instrumented treadmills, electromyography, metabolics, and wearable technologies (e.g., inertial measurement units). Install, adjust, calibrate, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for such instrumentation and equipment.
    3. Assists with the maintenance of regulatory documentation. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates.
    4. Collect, interpret, and analyze biomechanical data and video, using data acquisition, signal processing, and statistical techniques.
    5. Conduct training to educate the research team and other collaborating personnel on proper use of equipment. Write documents such as test plans, protocols, policies, standards of use, maintenance and repair of medical, research, and engineering equipment.
    6. Contribute to the preparation of abstracts for professional conferences, manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and development of research proposals.
    7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering (biomechanics coursework or experience is desirable); human subjects research training is desirable; statistics and signal processing; programming and algorithm development; knowledge and familiarity with military is desirable.

    Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering or related field is required.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 3-5 years of relevant work experience is required.

    Work Environment: Set in an office work environment.

    Background/Security: U.S. citizenship required; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier III Investigation/ Secret Clearance and Common Access Card (CAC).

    Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, which may include, but is not limited to, contacting your professional references, verification of previous employment, addresses, education, and credentials, a criminal background check, drug screening, and a department of motor vehicle (DMV) check.

    Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer.
