  • Postdoc Position in Neural Control of Prosthetics (UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering) Now Open

The Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory (NREL) at the UNC/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to transfer the knowledge in Computational Motor Control to Rehabilitation Applications. Currently, one position is available immediately.

    Required Qualifications:
    • A recent Ph.D. degree in Biomedical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or related fields.
    • Research experiences in two or more of the following areas: wearable robotics design or control, control theory (robust control and optimal adaptive control), biomechanics (focusing on gait, balance, and walking energetics), Machine learning and signal processing (especially EMG signal processing and computer vision), computational modeling of human motor control and learning.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    Additional Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in rehabilitation robotics
    • Programming skills (MATLAB, C++, LabView etc).
    • Record of peer-reviewed publications.

Prof. He (Helen) Huang is the director of NREL. This position provides an exciting opportunity for individuals who wish to work in a highly multidisciplinary research lab. Here in NREL at NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill, we investigate the control mechanism of neuromuscular systems in normal and neurologically-disabled individuals, develop advanced neural-machine interfacing technologies and advanced sensing and control frameworks, and apply these techniques to optimize the function of prosthetics, orthotics, and other assistive devices. Please visit our lab website for more information at http://nrel.bme.ncsu.edu.

NREL is in affiliation with the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State University. The nationally-ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill provide an excellent clinical environment for students to gain experience in medicine. Additionally, the College of Engineering at NC State is considered one of the best engineering and computer science schools in the world and offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer. As a researcher in our joint department, you will have many opportunities to leverage and expand on our existing collaborations with faculty at both universities and with clinicians at the UNC School of Medicine. Located in the vibrant Research Triangle, our universities are the cornerstone of tech and innovation.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their curriculum vitae, a 1-page research statement, selected publications, and three references. To learn more about our research or to submit an application, please contact us at nrel.ncsu@gmail.com.
