    PhD position in muscle physiology and biomechanics at the Institute of Physiology II, University of Muenster, Germany

    Position description / Responsibilities
    We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student interested in striated muscle function at the fiber and molecular level to join the Institute of Physiology II, University of Muenster, Germany, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Linke. This research group is world-renowned for its work uncovering the role of the muscle protein titin during sarcomere contraction, as well as its function (or dysfunction) in myopathies or exercise.

    The position will be funded for three years with a flexible start date for Summer/Fall 2021. The PhD position is associated with a DFG (German Research Foundation) research project entitled “Uncovering the role of titin during skeletal muscle contraction by targeted titin cleavage” to Dr. Anthony Hessel (who will co-advise the student with Prof. Dr. Linke as chair). The project will use a mouse model to identify changes in the mechanical profile and molecular structure of fibers caused by an immediate titin impairment. This will be done using permeabilized fiber mechanics, as well as small angle X-ray diffraction experiments, conducted at the world-class Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Labs, USA. Furthermore, a side project designed by the student, is encouraged.

    Required Qualifications

    Applicants should be highly motivated and have, or soon obtain, a MSc degree in biomechanics, biology/physiology, biochemistry, or a related field. Applicants should be able to present research that they have carried out, preferably culminating in a thesis or first-author research publication. Finally, a high level of English competency is mandatory.

    Desired Qualifications
    Candidates with experience at any level of muscle physiology are encouraged to apply. Strong technical skills in wet-lab methods such as immuno-imaging, Western blots, and PCR are highly desirable. Strong technical skills in data processing and analysis using software packages like Spike2 or MATLAB are highly desirable.

    Funding
    The successful candidate will receive excellent funding according to TV-L, which will be approx. 17.500 € / year after taxes and other deductions, including health insurance.
