  • Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Human-Robot Interaction during Exoskeletal-Assisted Locomotion, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey, USA

    We are seeking a motivated person to join our multidisciplinary team working on quantifying human-robot interaction during exoskeletal-assisted locomotion using controlled motion capture experiments and computational modeling. This position is funded for four years through a federal grant. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, experience with motion capture techniques, developed musculoskeletal models from motion capture data, and passionate about working with robotic exoskeletons to improve mobility and quality of life in persons with neurological disorders. The person will be expected to lead this project, which includes coordinating with external research collaborators, exoskeleton companies, and graduate and undergraduate students. This position includes numerous opportunities for professional growth and development, including teaching, developing new research projects, grant writing, and mentorship from an outstanding team of investigators from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Hospital, the Kessler Foundation, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

    The Computational Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Engineering Lab at NJIT conducts a broad range of research projects related to human movement ( We recently completed construction on the Life Sciences Motion Capture Lab, a state-of-the-art facility for hands-on research and learning ( This post-doctoral fellowship is a great opportunity for a driven person to lead this new collaborative lab and build a strong foundation for a career as an independent researcher.

    Job Requirements:
    Required Qualifications
    • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
    • Experience with motion capture techniques
    • Experience with building musculoskeletal models (OpenSim, AnyBody) from motion capture data
    • Experience with building subject-specific finite element models from medical imaging data
    • Proficiency in programming languages (Matlab, Python, C, C++)
    • Strong research publication record
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with musculoskeletal image processing (CT, MRI, pQCT)
    • Experience working with patient populations (stroke, spinal cord injury)
    • Experience with mechanical design and manufacturing techniques
    • Experience with wearable sensors to augment robotic exoskeletons

    Salary: Competitive with benefits

    Start data: October 1, 2021 preferred, but is negotiable.
