PhD Scholarship in bespoke body armour systems for the Australian Army: The University of Canberra, Australia
The Project
A fully funded PhD Scholarship is available for an outstanding candidate to work on a project at the University of Canberra in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Group investigating performance and comfort improvements achievable with bespoke body armour systems. This is an area of research focus for the Defence Science and Technology Group and researchers at the University of Canberra. A key focus of the project will be on the female soldier. Data collection will be undertaken at Army bases across Australia, as well as at the University of Canberra. The research project will also involve industry experience at the Defence Science and Technology Group, Melbourne. This is an exciting experience for a PhD candidate based at the University of Canberra to collaborate closely with researchers at the Defence Science and Technology Group, Melbourne, Australia, as well as collaborate with other other military researchers in Canada, the US, New Zealand and the UK as part of a collaborative research program.
The Scholarship
This PhD is co-funded by the University of Canberra and the Defence Science and Technology Group. The annual stipend is $30,000 per annum (tax free) for a period of 3.5 years of full-time study, including full tuition fee waiver. The opportunity is open to Australian citizens only, with demonstrated research track record (relative to opportunity). Anticipated enrolment is Semester 2, 2021 (August 2021).
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be based at The University of Canberra, Australia, under the supervision of Dr Celeste Coltman and Prof Nick Brown. External co-supervisors include Mr Richard Molloy (Defence Science and Technology Group, Australia), Emeritus Professor Julie Steele (University of Wollongong, Australia) and Associate Professor Jenny Burbage (Portsmouth University, United Kingdom). There will be opportunities to develop industry skills at The Defence Science and Technology Group and to collaborate with international military researchers.
This project would suit students with a strong background in biomechanics, mechanical or biomedical engineering, exercise science (kinesiology), ergonomics or human factors. Potential candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with Honours/ Masters in any of the fields described above or a related field. This opportunity is open to Australian citizens only. This is a competitive process with shortlisted applicants going to a second stage videoconference interview.
