We are seeking expressions of interest for two research opportunities, outlined below.
Project 1 will investigate the interplay between metabolic cost, stability, and cognitive task prioritization in walking. Project 2 will assess biomechanical outcome metrics commonly applied to users who wear a passive prosthesis. In particular, this body of work will focus on locomotor symmetry in persons with unilateral limb loss.
Housed within the University of New South Wales’ (UNSW) School of Health Sciences, the outlined projects offer collaboration opportunities with the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and the University of Wollongong.
The preferred candidates will be highly motivated, with (or nearing completion of) an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology/Sport Science/Exercise Physiology, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology (Project 1) or a related discipline with relevant research experience (Hons/MSc). Excellent teamwork and communication skills, and a willingness to work with human subjects are requirements of both projects. Applicants should have a strong theoretical understanding of biomechanics. Experience with motion capture is highly desired, as is MATLAB proficiency.
Following an expression of interest, the candidate may be encouraged to apply for an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship with the support of the P.I. (see links below). In line with the RTP, the expected start dates are Sept 2021 to Feb 2022 for domestic applicants and June 2022 to Sept 2022 for international applicants.
Interested candidates should send their C.V. and a brief cover letter to Dr Kirsty McDonald (kirsty.mcdonald@unsw.edu.au) by June 15, 2021. The cover letter should detail the candidate’s experience and interest in the project, and their preferred program (PhD/MSc).
