Asthma is the most prevalent chronic disease in the UK. Improvements in detection and management of asthma will improve outcomes for asthma patients and reduce the cost of treating the disease. Persistent symptoms and quality of life impairments associated with asthma are widely reported despite pharmacotheraputic intervention. Assessment of individual breathing patterns using 3D motion capture technology (opto-electronic plethysmography - OEP) is an attractive candidate for respiratory assessment, diagnosis, and management, particularly for children, and for the evaluation of exercise-induced symptoms. It provides rich information about the contribution and timing of different chest wall sections during healthy and pathological breathing. This project will build on previous work that has established measures to distinguish dysfunctional breathing from healthy breathing by extending these techniques to asthmatic breathing. Real-time breathing pattern feedback will used to restore healthy breathing patterns in those with dysfunctional and asthmatic breathing patterns to reduce symptoms. This project will lay the foundation for a breathing monitoring and retraining system derived from OEP methodology.
