    PhD Scholarship: Masticatory Robot/Chewing Machine

Applicants are invited for a full-time 3.5-year PhD scholarship commencing Sept 2021 in mechanical engineering at London South Bank University (LSBU). For their dissertation project, the applicant will be expected to undertake an interdisciplinary project which involves the design, prototype, and validation of a masticatory robot/chewing machine to investigate the relationship between dental form and function, with applications in dentistry, biological anthropology/archaeology, and dental/evolutionary biomechanics.

Applications are invited from candidates with Degrees/Master’s degrees that have a knowledge base in one or more of the following subject areas:
    1. Computer-aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA)
    2. Electronics and control systems
    3. Robotics engineering
    4. Mastication/masticatory biomechanics and/or dentistry
    5. Machine design and prototyping
    Funding information:
The studentship will be dual funded through a graduate teaching assistantship and the School of Engineering. Students will be expected to help teaching/marking associated with Solid Mechanics and Materials (a first-year mechanical engineering module) during the fall semesters. UK, EU, and other international students are welcome to apply.

    Supervisory Team:
The successful applicant will be situated in Berthaume Anthroengineering (BAE) labs and the Bioengineering Centre at LSBU. They will be co-supervised by Dr Michael Berthaume (Division of Mechanical Engineering and Design) and Prof Perry Xiao (Division of Electrical and Electronic Engineering). BAE labs aims to integrate theories and methods from anthropology and engineering to address larger problems.

    Application Procedure:
Applicants should ideally hold a minimum 2.1 first degree and preferably a Masters qualification in a relevant discipline area and have a strong interests in engineering, anthropology, dentistry, biomechanics, and/or evolutionary theory.

Given the positions imminent starting date (Sept 2021), applicants should submit the following as soon as possible:
    • A covering letter which includes a personal statement, relevant areas of expertise, and you inspiration to undertake this PhD (2 pg max)
    • A full CV, including the names and contact information of two referees
