  • Post-doc Research Fellow position in musculoskeletal biomechanics at the University of Birmingham

The Bio-Medical Engineering Research Group at the University of Birmingham is recruiting for a highly motivated Research Fellow to design, assess and optimise a new rehabilitation intervention using functional electrical stimulation (FES) for lower limb amputees.

The successful candidate will develop a neuromusculoskeletal model for lower limb amputees and through the integration of the model in predictive simulation, design a new FES rehabilitation programme to improve amputee gait performance. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team that consists of product design engineers, rehabilitation consultants and specialised surgeons in amputation. This position is funded by the EPSRC and is available on a fixed term of two years.

    Skills/Experience:

    • Experience in movement analysis, neuromusculoskeletal modelling (e.g., OpenSim) and numerical optimisation (static and/or dynamic optimisation)
    • Experience in the experimental study of human pathological gait due to ageing, brain or musculoskeletal injuries.
    • A strong interest in computer programming (Matlab, C++) to study the human neuromusculoskeletal system.
    • Ability to communicate with patients, clinicians and researchers from a variety of disciplines.
    Main Duties:
    • To work in close cooperation with Dr Ziyun Ding, other research staff, students and collaborators on the project
