Job Summary
The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks a highly motivated, self-starter for the unique role of Research Assistant, supporting cutting-edge experimental research conducted in the Motion Capture, Robotics Flight, and water labs at SEAS. In this exciting career position, you will work closely with faculty, students, and researchers to coordinate and support experiments conducted in these spaces, reporting directly to the Director of Science Operations at SEAS, and indirectly to faculty principal investigators. Job-Specific Responsibilities
- Work with faculty, students, and research staff to ensure resources are available and effectively managed to support research projects and laboratory activities in the short- and long-term.
- Maintain laboratory equipment including troubleshooting and upkeep of all laboratory instrumentation and associated software, such as motion capture cameras, force plates, instrumented treadmills, and a variety of electromyography and metabolic test systems. Communicate with motion capture camera manufacturers for purchasing, repairs and upgrades of equipment. Order and maintain supplies inventory.
- Ensure the smooth and safe functioning of these spaces and understand the technical nuances of the equipment. Stay current on technical advancements in analysis software and specialized instrumentation and equipment.
- Assist with the orientation, training, and safety of new research staff and students.
- Support the recruitment, scheduling, and testing of human research subjects for clinical studies performed in the motion capture labs. Oversee the safety of human subject study efforts within the Motion Capture Labs. Work with faculty and researchers to support the collection and storage of human subjects testing data. Communicate with the clinical research team on related issues.
- Work with faculty and researchers to assist with camera setup and calibration to support the collection and storage of research data in the Motion Capture and Robotics Flight Labs.
- Interact with faculty, students, and research staff to effectively manage scheduling.
- Support the development and revision of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state and University safety and regulatory requirements, especially for human subject research.
- Prepare and distribute annual status reports on the usage, access, and maintenance of the SEAS Motion Capture Labs and Robotics Flight Lab to the faculty members whose researchers use the space, and to the Director of Science Operations.
- Other duties may be assigned to support business needs.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Movement Science, Engineering or a related field required, with at least one year of experience working in a biomechanics laboratory environment. Related experience of 5+ years may be considered as a substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Ideal candidates will have experience with the following:
- Kinematic and kinetic data sets and electromyographic data
- Motion capture software (Vicon Nexus) and computer programming (Visual 3D, Matlab, Simulink, and/or OpenSim)
- Microsoft Office suite
- Writing and reviewing IRB protocols
- Other qualifications include the ability to juggle multiple projects, prioritize, problem solve, work with interruptions, and manage time effectively
- Must have strong organizational skills, creativity, and excellent communication skills
- Previous interaction with clinical populations is a plus
Additional Information
- This is a 2-year term position. It is anticipated that this position will spend 80-90% of time supporting the Motion Capture Labs and 10-20% of time supporting the Flight Lab.
