    Job description

    TU Delft has an academic vacancy on Cardiovascular Biomechanics, with a special focus on (multiscale) modelling of cardiovascular tissue mechanics, at the faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials engineering (3mE) in the department of Biomechanical Engineering, TU Delft.
    With this tenure track position, the department intends to expand its existing collaboration with the department of Biomedical Engineering from the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam on multiscale cardiovascular biomechanics. Considering the current commitment of both universities, we intend to establish an inter-university research group on cardiovascular biomechanics on the longer term.

    Research:
    Your research should ideally be rooted in multiscale soft tissue biomechanics. Keywords we are looking for include but are not limited to tissue failure, thrombus mechanics, tissue-device interaction and tissue characterization, specifically aimed as cardiovascular applications. A strong engineering background is required, affinity with both numerical and experimental work and tissue biology is a benefit. You expand and strengthen collaboration on cardiovascular biomechanics within the faculty and within the Medical Delta and in time create your own research line in conjunction with relevant scientific and clinical partners. You are expected to acquire grants to expand the research capacity and to build up your own research group. You will be working in close collaboration with dr. Gijsen, dr. Akyildiz, and dr. Peirlinck.

    Education:
    • You provide high-quality education in the field of cardiovascular biomechanics.
    • You show a clear commitment to the quality of courses on biomechanics throughout the whole curriculum of the faculty of 3mE.
    • You contribute to the faculty’s and the university’s pedagogical mission through the supervision of student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses) and by acting as a supervisor of PhD students.
    • You are expected to use and introduce innovative methods and techniques in teaching in order to cope with large classes and to obtain high success rates.
    • Your teaching duties are negotiated in agreement with and based on your specific profile.
    Department
    The Department of BioMechanical Engineering coordinates the Education and Research activities in the field of Mechanical Engineering techniques, like modeling and design, to analyze the interaction between biological and technical systems.

    Your profile:
    You are a talented, enthusiastic researcher with a strong engineering background and affinity with tissue mechanics. You currently hold a postdoc or junior research position, and have an interesting list of high-quality innovative papers, and a good international network. You are a team-player and are looking forward to help build up the new cardiovascular biomechanics section at the TU Delft.

    Conditions of employment
    A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

    Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme. TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

    Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication: € 3.807 to € 5.922 per month gross).
