  • Research Associate Position in Experimental Biomechanics at the University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics

The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Research Associate position at the Center for Applied Biomechanics. General duties will include managing complex experimental projects including designing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on results. The Research Associate will assist in the development of new research projects and will help supervise graduate research assistants, technical staff, and junior researchers on project-specific tasks.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, with emphasis in biomechanics, orthopaedics, or closely related field by the start date.
    • A minimum of three years of experience in biomechanics testing, instrumentation and testing using cadavers, dummies, and volunteers, mechanical design and the development of signal processing algorithms using Matlab. Experience should include the following:
      • Demonstrated experience with biomechanics testing with preference towards impact scenarios (e.g., sports, automotive, military), experimental protocol design, test procedure documentation, technical report preparation, and active participation in a multi-disciplinary research team comprised of senior support staff, graduate students, and other researchers in a dynamic testing environment.
      • Fundamental understanding of the mechanics associated with high-rate loadings to the human body.
      • Experience with mechanical design, including proficiency with computer aided design (CAD) software.
      • Preferred experience in each of the following:
        • set-up and operation of high-speed data acquisition systems including DTS products such as SLICE, SLICE Pro and TDAS,
        • set-up and operation of high-speed digital imager systems including Memrecam products such as the GX1 (or equivalent),
        • set-up and use of high-energy test devices in biomechanical testing applications, including the development and implementation of control algorithms and integration of the test device operation with peripheral test systems (e.g., Vicon, ARAMIS), and
        • expertise with the development of customized processing algorithms for subject-specific kinematic transformation and analysis
        • development and implementation of advanced data analysis algorithms in a common scientific programming language (for example, Matlab)
    • Demonstrable knowledge in statistical analyses for quantitative hypothesis testing
    • Minimum of five years of demonstrable proficiency in high-quality technical writing.
    • Demonstrate experience in working with a diverse group of researchers and sponsors or varying technical expertise.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en...anics_R0030336 and attach a cover letter, CV/resume, and contact information for three references (name, email address, telephone number, and address). Please note that multiple documents can be uploaded in the box.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on November 16, 2021, but the position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

This is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
