Postdoctoral Fellowship in Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Rehabilitation Engineering

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

The Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center (NUPOC) in Chicago is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in prosthetics, orthotics and rehabilitation engineering, under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Major, PhD. The position is for up to 3 years, renewed annually based on performance.

The postdoctoral fellow will be primarily responsible for leading two DoD-funded projects. The first project is a collaborative study with the University of Nebraska at Omaha (Co-PI, Kota Takahashi, PhD) and the Naval Medical Center San Diego (Co-PI, Trevor Kingsbury, MSc), and focuses on implementing numerical modelling and human subject testing to optimize prosthetic prescription for supporting musculoskeletal health of Veterans and Service Members with leg amputation. The second project is a collaborative study with industry involving human subject testing to design and evaluate orthotic technology for rapid ankle immobilization of Service Members in the field. While physically located in Chicago, the postdoctoral fellow will have an opportunity to collaborate across sites for both projects.

The postdoctoral fellow will also have opportunity to pursue their own research, mentor graduate students, generate manuscripts for publication, and prepare grant proposals. Additional professional learning and certifications are available through the Northwestern University School of Professional Studies, and auditing prosthetics and orthotics courses through the NUPOC Masters in Prosthetics and Orthotics clinical education program.

Ideal candidates will have been awarded a PhD in an area related to biomechanics, engineering, or human movement sciences. Candidates should have research experience and/or interest in gait analysis, motor control and rehabilitation science. Knowledge of motion capture, modelling/programming (MATLAB, Visual 3D), and biostatistics is highly desirable.

This full-time position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

NUPOC (https://www.nupoc.northwestern.edu/) is located within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. NUPOC is located in downtown Chicago along Lake Michigan, next to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and just east of the Magnificent Mile. The Chicago campus has a strong rehabilitation and medical community allowing opportunity for extended mentoring and collaboration.

    To Apply:
Interested candidates should submit via email a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and three references as a PDF file to Matthew Major, PhD, at matthew-major@northwestern.edu.
