    Cardiff Metropolitan University Vice-Chancellors PhD Studentship: Retraining running gait: Understanding the biopsychosocial mechanisms behind reducing patellofemoral pain using real-time biofeedback

    Project Details

    This project will examine the biopsychosocial mechanisms that contribute to effective gait retraining to rehabilitate runners with patellofemoral pain. Patellofemoral pain is the most common running-related injury. One form of effective treatment for patellofemoral pain is gait retraining. Gait retraining refers to changing how an individual runs using instructions, which can be combined with providing real-time biofeedback. However, the biopsychosocial mechanisms that underpin gait retraining and the most effective strategies to use during gait retraining are unknown. This project will use an interdisciplinary perspective, combining biomechanical and psychological approaches, to address these gaps.

    Working in collaboration with clinicians and international partners, a real-time biofeedback system will be developed using wearable sensors. The biofeedback system will then be used alongside verbal instructions to conduct an intervention study to rehabilitate runners with patellofemoral pain.

    Criteria

    All applications will be judged on merit and we welcome applications from all members of the community. We particularly encourage those from diverse groups and those under-represented in STEMM

    Applicants will need to hold a good honours degree (minimum 2:1) in a related subject area (e.g., sport and exercise science, physical activity, health sciences), while a postgraduate qualification is desirable. Applicants will also need to demonstrate a knowledge of different science disciplines (e.g., biomechanics, psychology), an ability to use 3D motion capture and process kinematic data and experience working with, or a willingness to learn, programming languages (e.g., Matlab, python), as well as the potential to successfully complete a higher degree by research.

In the personal statement applicants need to outline their reasons for applying for the PhD studentship and expand on relevant skills, knowledge and experience.
