  • PhD Position in Biomedical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, New Jersey, USA)

    PhD Studentship
    Musculoskeletal Control & Dynamics Lab
    Department of Biomedical Engineering
    Stevens Institute of Technology

    Hoboken, New Jersey, USA

We are happy to announce a fully funded PhD studentship in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. The Musculoskeletal Control and Dynamics Lab, led by Prof. Antonia Zaferiou, is seeking a PhD student who is interested in developing adaptive and personalized “sonified biofeedback” to improve older adult balance control. Sonified biofeedback conveys biological sensor data through soundscapes in real-time. This studentship is supported by Zaferiou’s National Science Foundation CAREER grant (NSFAward#1944207) and other fellowship opportunities.

If you are interested in biomechanics, perception-action coupling, motor control, motor learning, machine learning, artificial intelligence, wearable sensors, and/or sound and music-based biofeedback, please consider this exciting opportunity! Prior experience with one or more of the listed topics above is considered a plus, but is not required. Our lab offers a vibrant and collaborative learning environment that values transdisciplinary approaches and diverse viewpoints. We are looking forward to growing with a prospective doctoral student who is eager to advance knowledge about balance motor learning and interested in broadening participation in STEAM through community engagement activities.

Stevens is a private, student-centric research university in Hoboken, NJ. Our 55-acre park-like campus overlooks the Hudson River with views of Manhattan and is minutes from Manhattan via public transportation. Stevens values diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff of all backgrounds. Stevens is an Equal Opportunity Employer and an NSF ADVANCE institution committed to equitable practices and policies. We strongly encourage candidates who identify with groups typically underrepresented in engineering and biomechanics to apply.

Applications received prior to February 18th will receive the highest priority, though the application portal is open on a rolling-basis (no fixed deadline): Please email Dr. Antonia Zaferiou if you have any questions. Feel free to share this opportunity broadly.
