Job Description
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be responsible for the development and execution of research involving a rehabilitation intervention in infants. The applicant will work in the Max Nader Center for Rehabilitation Technologies Outcomes Research, a part of the Center of Bionic Medicine. Members of the research team include engineers, neuroscientists, physicians, therapists, and additional staff in the rehabilitation community. The center’s overarching goal is to inform clinical practice through rigorous quantitative research.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will collect and analyze infant movement data, physiological data, and results from periodic developmental assessments in infants, beginning in the neonatal intensive care unit through 12-24 months corrected age. Assessments and data collection may occur in the laboratory, clinic, or home settings. This position is supported by a collaborative foundational grant to support early detection and intervention for children with neuromotor delays or deficits.
A successful applicant should have a background in physical or occupational therapy and experience with developmental assessments in infants, biomedical research or a related discipline, and with knowledge or interest in neuroscience and intervention development. Computational skills, with proficiency in MATLAB or Python would be preferred. Experience in intervention development, fidelity monitoring, REDCap database management and/or experience with video-based pose estimation and analyzing physiological sensor-based data (such as from accelerometers, gyroscopes, EMG, or ECG) would be preferred. A moderate level of independence will be expected, including the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and research assistants. Due to the intermittent need to collect or supervise collection of data in the clinic and home settings, some flexibility in schedule is required.

Principal Responsibilities
- Assist with development of collaborative projects within and outside the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and test ideas for new projects development.
- Apply for fellowships and grants for external lab funding and career development.
- Develop, submit and publish the results of research projects in high quality journals and present data to public conferences/seminars when needed.
- Participate weekly lab meetings, journal clubs and seminars.
- Build and maintain a well-organized and accountable journal of own laboratory protocols, experiments, results and analyses.
- Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
- Doctoral degree (PhD) and relevant research experience in biomedical engineering, data science, or a related field.
- Physical therapy or occupational therapy degree, clinical experience with young infants.
- Less than 2 years of postdoctoral training.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in analytical and statistical skills to execute appropriate tests for the research and interpret results.
- Ability to work closely with patients, clinicians, research team members, and professional organizations.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills needed to participate as a creative member of a growing research team.
- Willingness to network within the organization and to independently strengthen/develop new external collaborations.
- Ability to plan and to coordinate project requirements in an efficient and timely fashion.
- Experience with machine learning techniques (designing, training, and validating results from a breadth of machine learning algorithms) is preferred.

Working Conditions
- Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
- Occasional offsite work (in clinic or participant's home) for data collection.
