JOB SUMMARY:
This individual will contribute to all aspects of scientific research and product testing in a private ergonomics lab to evaluate the effect of medical device design on patient or caregiver safety and health. This person will interact with design engineers to develop design requirements, marketing teams to demonstrate evidence of product performance, and customers to identify research and product needs. The business units supported will include patient support systems (Hillrom beds, surfaces, and stretchers; Liko safe patient handling and mobility equipment) and surgical solutions (surgical tables and positioning devices). In this role, the research scientist will plan and conduct research studies with human participants; using and developing skills in experimental design, computer programming, data acquisition, scientific writing, and statistical analysis. Tools and equipment used may include motion capture, force plates, load cells, EMG, subjective surveys, etc. The individual will be expected to author research papers and disseminate research findings at professional conferences. Opportunities will also be available to train and support internal product usability testing. Contributions to intellectual property development are also expected. This role will report to a Ph.D. engineer. Up to 10% travel may be required. The position is based in Batesville, Indiana (45 minutes west of Cincinnati, Ohio) and a flexible work schedule will be possible to reduce daily commutes if desired.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. degree is preferred; a lesser degree with commensurate research experience will be considered
- Ability to write and critically analyze academic literature
- Competency with statistical data analysis
- Working knowledge of engineering software (e.g., MATLAB)
- Knowledge of ergonomics and biomechanics is preferred
- Experience in healthcare, the medical device industry, or product development is preferred
- Experience with usability testing or product testing is preferred
- Experience with motion capture equipment and EMG is preferred
- Experience with data acquisition is preferred
