  • Research Health Scientist at VA Puget Sound

The Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research & Development Center for Limb Loss and MoBility (CLiMB) in Seattle, WA is soliciting applications for a Principal Investigator to join our established research team. CLiMB’s mission is to preserve, restore, and enhance functional mobility, independence, and participation in Veterans with lower limb loss or other musculoskeletal impairments. We serve Veterans with mobility disabilities arising from medical comorbidities or post-service trauma, as well as those with injuries sustained while on active duty, including small but important cohorts of women and other under-represented minorities. We are addressing mobility loss through the following research focus areas: (1) prevention of impairment onset and progression, (2) innovative mobility device development, (3) evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation interventions, and (4) personalized surgical and prosthetic/orthotic interventions. Our ultimate goal is to generate research that often begins in a “discovery” phase culminating in the translation of knowledge and devices to the clinical environment.

The major responsibility of the successful applicant will be to initiate and conduct scientific research by generating ideas, communicating these ideas through successful funding mechanisms, and overseeing research support staff to further CLiMB’s mission. We are seeking applicants with innovative approaches to clinically important research questions who function well in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary research environment; the goal of our research is to answer important questions, develop new avenues for further study, and translate devices and knowledge products to the clinical setting in order to improve the function and quality of life of people with or at risk for anatomic or functional limb loss.

CLiMB investigators include scientists and clinician-scientists from a variety of scientific backgrounds (e.g., biomechanics, engineering, or epidemiology) with affiliate faculty appointments at the University of Washington including the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Health Services and Epidemiology, and Computer Science and Engineering. The purpose of the CLiMB’s research is broad and includes human biomechanics and its applications in the fields of orthopaedics, rehabilitation, amputation prevention, motion analysis, and prosthesis design. It also includes the biopsychosocial aspects of amputation rehabilitation and treatment, as well as the effect of rehabilitation interventions on function and quality of life. This work has the potential for having a major impact on the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of Veterans and non-Veterans with or at risk for disability due to diminished lower limb function.

The duties of the successful applicant will include defining problems of clinical relevance, formulating appropriate hypotheses, developing new approaches, methods and techniques as needed, applying for, and obtaining funding support from national sponsors (federal and non-federal), supervising and training laboratory and research coordinator staff, interpreting results, and communicating their significance via publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentation at national/international conferences, and other means of broad dissemination.

This position requires an MD, DO, or PhD degree or equivalent appropriate to the applicant’s field of research. The ability to conduct scientific research must be demonstrated through authorship of scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals, and a history of research funding as a Principal Investigator. Ability to apply for and obtain investigator-initiated funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs and other government and/or non-government agencies is essential.

Interested candidates (U.S. citizens only) should email a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references to:
