Research Engineer Position in Knee Biomechanics - Hospital for Special Surgery - New York, NY, USA

A position is available for a master’s level mechanical or biomedical engineer in the Biomechanics Department at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) starting in the Spring of 2022. An exceptional bachelor’s level engineer with at least two years of experience in industry or in a research laboratory will also be considered.

The position primarily involves creating and running statistically augmented finite element models of the human knees joint, to quantify the knee-specific factors that drive variability in contact mechanics after partial meniscectomy. The research engineer will work in dynamic multidisciplinary, team-based research groups which include surgeons, radiologists, mechanical engineers, statisticians, and biologists.

We are looking for an individual with the following character traits, abilities, and skills:
    • Interest in musculoskeletal biomechanics with applications in the knee joint focusing on orthopedic soft tissue injury and repair.
    • Familiarity with software tools (e.g., MIMICS, MeshLab) for image processing and 3D reconstruction of medical image data from MRI and CT.
    • Familiarity with reverse engineering software tools (e.g., Geomagic Design X, Studio, Wrap)
    • Experience with software required to create and run finite element models (e.g., ABAQUS, Truegrid, FEBio).
    • Coding experience using Python language (especially within ABAQUS).
    • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams including engineers, post-doctoral students, orthopaedic surgeons, medical students, therapists, radiologists, and statisticians.
    • Ability to clearly communicate and present engineering topics in layman’s terms to non-engineers.
    • Ability to work independently within timelines using critical thinking skills towards a long-term vision.
    • Willingness to work in areas outside of expertise.
    • Willingness to guide, mentor, and manage high school students, undergraduate engineers, medical students, and clinical residents and fellows.

If you are interested in this position, please provide a cover letter and resume/CV to Dr. Brett Steineman at: steinemanb@hss.edu
