Want to launch your career as an independent Rehabilitation Researcher at the cutting edge of neuroscience and assistive technology? The Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio are recruiting for research scientists at Assistant and Associate equivalent ranks in the design, optimization, and experimental demonstration of control systems for peripheral nerve stimulation that improve the health and societal participation of individuals with paralysis. Work will take place at the Motion Study Laboratory of the LSCVAMC with a dynamic interdisciplinary team led by Drs. Musa Audu, John McDaniel and Ron Triolo that conducts federally funded research ranging from the basic underlying physiological responses to voluntary and stimulation-driven exercise (cycling, rowing, hand cranking, etc.) in real-world and virtual environments to user acceptance and effects on overall perceptions of health.
Areas of interest include acute and chronic muscular, skeletal, and cardiovascular adaptations to exercise, strategies to maximize workout intensity and duration, physical device and training program design, user interfaces and experiences (UX/UI), and modeling, optimization, and application of advanced control systems that coordinate voluntary and stimulation-assisted motion. Expectations include laboratory implementation, clinical validation, and community dissemination. Collaborative opportunities in biomechanics, neural engineering, robotics, rehabilitation, musculoskeletal modeling and dynamic simulation, and quantitative analysis of user- device interactions are available at CWRU and the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center of the VA Rehabilitation R&D Service. While developing an externally funded research program and publication record of their own, successful applicants will contribute to ongoing projects involving significant interactions with established faculty, pre- and post-doctoral trainees, and research volunteers.
Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills are required. Candidates should have (1) a Ph.D. or equivalent in Biomedical, Rehabilitation or Neural Engineering, Exercise Physiology or Rehabilitation Science, Kinesiology, Physical Therapy or related discipline; (2) good working knowledge and application of dynamic systems, feedback control, and optimization; (3) experience with collection and analysis of kinematic and kinetic data; and (4) familiarity with musculoskeletal modeling in the OpenSim environment and MATLAB/Simulink real-time control programming.
Ready to roll up your sleeves for a career that will make a difference to people with physical disabilities? Please send a 1) personal research statement, 2) full CV with funding and publication history, 3) sample publication, and 4) list of three references to:
