The Laboratory Manager is responsible for coordinating all matters related to biomechanics research projects and service conducted on behalf of the Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC) including roles in planning, execution, publication, and presentation. Principally, the position is responsible for coordinating and maintaining laboratory standards, data management and records and staffing of the three-dimensional motion capture laboratories at the clinic as well as staff training.
This is a full-time, position, reporting to Director of Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine department and its stand-alone “SSCLab” building is a 14,000 sq ft facility seeing over 40,000 outpatients a year and is at the forefront of clinical and applied research in the fields of return to play and rehabilitation in athletic groin pain, anterior cruciate ligament injury, Shoulder reconstruction, running injury and low back pain. The SSC has three 3D motion capture laboratories, two with indoor turf floors to assess athletic groin pain and anterior cruciate ligament injury, and a multi-functional lab (run3D & shoulder laboratory). The laboratory sees over 1500 patients each year across a 6 day week.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Delivery of high-quality data collection / processing and reporting for multiple concurrent clinical and research activities, including the development of new services and protocols.
- Responsibility for laboratory technical equipment - including troubleshooting, system checks, organising servicing/repair as needed and managing stock levels of consumables.
- Biomechanical data integrity, reliability, accuracy, storage, record-keeping and access management.
- Line management, training of laboratory research assistants and interns.
- Organisation of staffing to ensure appropriate cover as per operational requirements.
- Coordination and delivery of relevant training and CPD to staff, interns and students.
- Collaboration on research projects with other departmental staff.
- Maintenance of previous developed GUI’s and databases.
Requirements of the Role:
- Master’s degree in a related scientific discipline required with prior work experience in biomechanical data capture (individuals with a Doctorate may of course apply with a specialist interest and others with appropriate experience might also apply).
- Competence and 1st hand experience in Matlab / Python and optical motion capture.
- Analytic and decisive thinking with the ability to prioritize, manage time, and communicate to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve institutional goals.
- Knowledge of statistical principals (t-test, ANOVA, regression and clustering) is a string requirement.
- Previous experience in CMAS accredited laboratory (desirable).
