  • MAE Research Professor in Autonomous Automobile Safety, University of Virginia

The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for a new Open-Rank Research Professor (Academic General Faculty, Research Track) position, specializing in Autonomous Automobile Safety, for the Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB) in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. The Research Professor will be expected to lead a dynamic team, develop and maintain an energetic and well-funded research program, advise MS and PhD students, and collaborate with the Center’s other researchers in continuing to lead the field of automobile safety, with a focus on the growing level of autonomy in vehicles. Rank is dependent upon experience and qualifications.

The CAB is one of the largest university-based automobile safety and injury biomechanics research centers on earth. It was founded in 1989 and has grown steadily since. Currently the Center operates with a staff of approximately 50 researchers and support staff, including 9 Principal Investigators from SEAS and the School of Medicine, in a dedicated, state-of-the-art, 35,000 ft2 facility with world-class computational, experimental, mechanical, and biological resources. UVA and SEAS have made it a priority to encourage interdisciplinary research and the Research Professor will strategically position the Center's automobile safety research programs and enhance CAB’s reputation as a world-leader in the field. This position will also benefit from new opportunities in Engineering, Health and Cyber-Physical Systems across grounds to provide transformational investments in the quality of UVA's research.

Candidates must possess a PhD in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field, and be internationally recognized for research excellence in at least one area of autonomous automobile safety including
      • active, passive, and integrated safety,
      • the biomechanics of injury prediction and mitigation,
      • crash avoidance and automated driver assistance systems,
      • safety robustness,
      • crash epidemiology and statistical modeling,
      • human factors, or
      • human machine interface.
The candidates who have a proven record of extramural research funding and experience in managing such projects are preferred. Preference will also be given to candidates who have a demonstrated record of collaborative relationships across engineering departments, with other universities, and with medical school researchers.

Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en...ering_R0036288 and attach a cover letter, statement of research interest (which identifies research experience, expertise, excellence and vision) as well as a statement of commitment to inclusive practices that create climates in which all stakeholders can reach their maximum potential (which identifies previous and ongoing work demonstrating this commitment and a vision for future work), an academic CV, and contact information for three professional references.
