Job Purpose
A postdoctoral research associate is required to work on the World Rugby instrumented mouthguard project. This is a large-scale instrumented mouthguard project in elite level rugby (Premiership and AP-15). The aim is to develop a greater understanding of player head acceleration exposure and the mechanisms of concussion and repetitive head impacts in the sport. Additionally, the kinematic signals of all reviewed concussion and suspected concussion cases can be utilised to develop a “head check” model to aid the side line decision making process for player removal. An exploratory approach will be undertaken to assess the predictive capacity of peak kinematic measures, lumped parameter model-based brain injury criteria and finite element brain strain estimations.
Full Time, Fixed-Term for 24 months. Hybrid working is possible and the ability to work remotely within the UK can be negotiated.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Working with and processing large datasets of head kinematic data using MATLAB/Python (or similar). This could include conducting finite element analysis and developing predictive models.
2. Liaising closely with the collaborating stakeholders (Prevent Biometrics, World Rugby and all involved rugby clubs) in regards to study updates and research findings and co-ordination of research participants.
3. Oversee the provision of instrumented mouthguard devices and data collection within the study.
4. Preparation and maintenance of all study documentation, including data collection forms, adverse events, research folders, study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments and screening/monitoring/data collection databases.
5. Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with relevant University Policies.
6. Being prepared to travel to sports clubs (UK, Ireland or Europe) in connection with the needs of the project and potentially work outside normal working hours if needed.
7. Assist in drafting of reports and grants for external funder/bodies.
8. Present research findings as per study requirements.
9. Assist in the provision of day-to-day supervision of any students working on the study.
10. Any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post.
