    Excited to announce a new posting for an Open Rank (Ass/Assoc/Full Prof), Tenured/Tenure Track Position. The criteria for the person we are looking for are very broad, in order to attract the best possible candidates to come and join a research-focused group of faculty.

    The Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR) and the Human Performance Laboratory at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science are seeking to hire an OPEN-RANKED TENURED/TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION to support the expansion of our external, federally funded research efforts, as part of an ongoing investment into the growth and development of the center.

    Who We Are

    Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS), is located in the city of North Chicago, Illinois, between the thriving cities of Chicago and Milwaukee at the northeast corner of Illinois. RFUMS’s main campus is home to a richly diverse community. It is the only graduate health science university in the United States proudly named after a woman scientist. The university embodies the spirit of inquiry and excellence modeled by its namesake Dr. Rosalind Franklin. RFUMS is comprised six postgraduate health profession schools and colleges, including the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine which houses CLEAR.

    Founded in 2004, CLEAR’s mission is to make measurable improvements in the health and function of the lower extremities by using multidisciplinary approaches to: biomedical engineering, clinical & basic sciences, and health services. CLEAR serves as one of the nation’s most productive and well-known interdisciplinary podiatric research centers as evidenced by its exemplary publication record in diverse journals and a history of industry and federally funded projects from agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the American Diabetes Association. Ongoing research efforts within CLEAR are focused on: biomechanics of locomotion; fall-risk assessment; fall-prevention; human performance optimization; diabetic wound healing; promoting mobility across diverse populations including older adults, patients with diabetes, patients with traumatic brain injury, patients with obesity, and patients with lower extremity amputation; injury prevention; material testing of prosthetic and orthotic devices.

    Much of the research within CLEAR is performed within The Human Performance Laboratory, a state-of-the-art 1800 sq ft facility fully equipped to support all research needs. The lab currently houses a 16-camera motion capture system with markerless capabilities (Theia3D), 5 Kistler force plates, a Motek instrumented C-Mill treadmill, Biodex dynamometer, Instron material testing system, a Gaitrit system, a Pedar plantar pressure system, an Emed pressure mat, a portable calorimetry system, and ADPM full body OPAL sensors.

    The successful candidate must be able to synergistically contribute to the ongoing themes of the current research and further develop their own independent line of questioning. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a program of extramurally funded research, or a strong potential for securing funding as evidenced by both publication and grant submission history. We encourage applications from candidates conducting basic and applied research that focuses on one or more of the following:
    1. Human performance/injury prevention
    2. Development and implementation of clinical trials to evaluate novel exercise-based interventions for improving mobility, and/or Human Performance
    3. The effects of cognition and/or psychosocial factors on movement
    4. Brain activity during planning and execution of movement using techniques such as fNIRS and EEG
    5. The effects of aging or diabetes on motor control, using quantitative techniques such as muscle synergies and motor modules
    6. The use of data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence for examining rehabilitation and/or human performance optimization.
    7. Foot biomechanics and/or the design and development of orthotics to enhance human performance/prevent injuries
    8. Robotics/Exoskeleton development and their use in rehabilitation and/or human performance optimization
    9. Musculoskeletal modeling, particularly as it relates to human performance optimization, locomoting with a prosthesis, aging or falls.

    Candidates that employ methods that relate to the following areas: forward dynamic modeling, neurophysiology, virtual reality and exer-gaming, smart technology embedded system design, injury mechanics, or human device interface are also encouraged to apply.
    Candidates are expected to have an interest in collaborating within interprofessional teams including podiatrists, psychologists, physical therapists, or other health professionals. Opportunities to collaborate with interdisciplinary medical professionals and potential access to patient populations is bolstered by the fact that the university is adjacent to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, which is the only existing partnership between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

    Job Duties/ Responsibilities
    The tenure track faculty member’s primary responsibility is focused on conducting research to grow and sustain an extramurally funded research program. Consequently, candidates will devote the majority of their efforts toward independent scholarly research but will be expected to provide some classroom education. All full-time faculty members employed by RFUMS are expected to engage in activities that are considered core to their primary role as a faculty member. These activities may include teaching, scholarly activity, and service.

    Teaching responsibilities vary and may include:
    • Direct instruction
    • Curriculum management
    • Assessment
    • Advising and mentoring for students

    Scholarly activities vary and may include:
    • Original scholarship
    • Grant procurement
    • Research mentoring

    Expectations regarding scholarly activity/productivity depend on the level of the position applied for. When submitting application packet please mention what level you wish to be hired at.

    Service activities vary and may include internal and external contributions through:
    • Committees
    • Contributions to the profession
    • Recruitment
    • Direct patient care

    Scholarly activities and/or clinical activities are negotiated and determined at the department level and are primarily based upon the faculty track.

    Required Education & Experience
    • Ph.D. in a science discipline (e.g., Bioengineering, Kinesiology/Exercise Science, Biomechanics, Motor Control, Rehabilitation Science, Neuroscience, etc.), or a terminal doctoral degree in the health professions
    • Two years Postdoctoral research experience following terminal degree

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving ability
    • Ability to work collaboratively with clinical and basic science faculty


    Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    The selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. The individual must be able to participate in minimal lifting, bending, standing, and walking. The typical working conditions are climate-controlled environments such as an office, large classroom, small group, and interpersonal interactions with research participants, students, faculty, and staff.
