Individuals wishing to pursue a PhD in Applied Neuromechanics through the Department of Kinesiology are invited to apply for a graduate research / administrative assistantship in the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness. This is a full time (20 hour) position that will assist with ongoing interdisciplinary research and programmatic activities in the Center.
The Center for Women’s Health and Wellness was established in 2002 to advance high quality interdisciplinary and translational research to improve the lives of girls and women. Although classified as a research center, we are equally committed to educational, networking, and community offerings to train the next generation of scholars and practitioners and promote the health and wellness of girls and women in Greensboro and the global community. Doctoral Studies in Applied Neuromechanics: The Applied Neuromechanics concentration integrates knowledge across Biomechanics, Motor Behavior, Sports Medicine, and Athletic Training to prepares practitioners, researchers, and educators to identify and reduce injury risk, restore normal function following injury or disease, and improve overall health and performance in physically active individuals of all ages. The Applied Neuromechanics Research Laboratory (ANRL) includes state of the art instrumentation to assess human muscle performance, joint morphology and behavior, anthropometrics, postural control, and biomechanics. Fitness testing and exercise studies are conducted in the adjacent Coleman Gym dedicated for research purposes. The ANRL actively collaborates with the Exercise Endocrinology and Motor Behavior Research Laboratories, the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, Department of Nutrition, and Gateway MRI facility to foster interdisciplinary research.
Current research projects include development of an instrumented knee arthrometer for injury risk screening and prediction; identifying factors that impact ACL structure and function; and understanding ACL risk development in adolescent girls as a function of multiple contributing factors (e.g., body composition, hormones, knee laxity, ACL morphology).
Successful candidates should have completed a Master’s degree in an appropriate field of study, have the clinical expertise and research interests within the breadth of the CWHW or ANRL, and be highly motivated to develop their independent research, writing, and presentation skills. Candidates with 3-5 years of clinical experience are preferred. The comprehensive plan of study will also provide experiences in teaching, mentoring undergraduate research, and grant writing. Applicants are encouraged to complete their graduate school application by February 15th to insure full consideration.
