The Closed-Loop Engineering Research (CLEAR) core (https://www.clear-ncsu-unc.com/), consisting of faculty members at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State), is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join other current fellows in the Combined Human and Rehabilitative Machine System (CHARMS) program. This postdoctoral fellowship program is supported by an Advanced Rehabilitation Research and Training award provided by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). The goal of CHARMS is to develop the next generation of rehabilitation researchers.
The postdoctoral fellow will have substantial flexibility to explore opportunities at North Carolina’s two flagship universities: the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The nationally-ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-CH provide an excellent clinical environment for fellows to gain experience in medicine, while the College of Engineering at NC State, one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer. Additional resources include the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (https://www.bme.unc.edu/), the newly funded NIDILRR ASSET Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC), the UNC Neuroscience Center (https://www.med.unc.edu/neuroscience), the Human Movement Science Program at UNC (http://hmsc.unc.edu), the Biomedical Research Imaging Center at UNC (https://www.med.unc.edu/bric), the ASSIST Center at NC State (https://assistcenter.org/), and the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (https://cvm.ncsu.edu/).
The qualified candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in engineering, movement science, psychology, or a related field. Candidates should be passionate about rehabilitation research, and will have extensive flexibility to broaden their skills to successfully address future needs in rehabilitation. Candidates should identify potential fellowship mentors from the faculty at UNC-CH and NC State in the cover letter for their application. ARRT fellows will be paired with a primary mentor, in whose laboratory they will develop and conduct their research, while receiving additional guidance from identified secondary mentors. The fellowship includes support for travel and lab materials. These funds are expected to be supplemented by the primary mentor. In addition to the cover letter, applications should include a CV and the names and contact information of at least three references. These materials should be submitted to Ms. Laura Rohrbaugh (lasmith6@ncsu.edu). Applications will be examined on a rolling basis starting on March 1, 2023.
