Summary:
Dr. Patrick Corrigan is currently looking for a PhD student to join the Orthopedic Biomechanics and Imaging Team in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training at Saint Louis University (SLU). The successful candidate will participate in research projects aligned with the team’s mission, which is to improve outcomes for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions by developing novel treatment strategies and improving our understanding of biomechanical, structural, and neurophysiological mechanisms that explain patient outcomes. While current projects are largely focused on knee osteoarthritis and lower extremity tendon injuries, the student’s projects may be tailored to their interests and goals.
The expected start date is August 2023.

Qualifications:
  • B.S. or M.S. in engineering, biomechanics, kinesiology, exercise science, or related field
  • Excellent communication, time management, organizational, and computer skills
  • The ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Exceptional candidates may also:
  • Possess a physical therapy degree (PT, MPT, or DPT)
  • Have experience working in a human biomechanics lab
  • Show scholarly productivity (e.g., peer-reviewed publications)

Environment:
The successful candidate will join a growing research group under the direction of Dr. Corrigan. The group conducts their research in the Integrated Health and Movement Science (IHMS) Lab, which is in the Allied Health Professions Building on SLU’s Medical Center Campus. This 2500 ft2 lab space is dedicated to studying human movement, with major equipment including a 16-camera three-dimensional motion analysis system, a force-instrumented split-belt treadmill, two in-ground force plates, spatiotemporal mats, an electromyography system, several wearable sensor systems, a functional near-infrared spectroscopy system, a computerized dynamometer, and a diagnostic ultrasound scanner. The lab also has space for clinical examination and treatment as well as 8 workstations with computers that are equipped with software packages necessary for executing clinical biomechanics research.

The successful candidate will join the Integrated and Applied Sciences PhD Program, which is housed in SLU’s Doisy College of Health Sciences. This flexible and highly dynamic program aims to prepare students to become scholars and researchers within academic, clinical research, and practice settings by conducting interdisciplinary studies of biological, behavioral, psychosocial, and environmental aspects of human health. Coursework can be tailored to the student’s research interests, with options to take courses in the School of Medicine (e.g., Health Outcomes Research), the School of Public Health and Social Justice (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics), and the School of Science and Engineering (e.g., biomechanics, tissue engineering). While Dr. Corrigan will serve as the primary mentor, the student will be embedded in a highly collaborative research environment and receive mentorship from other researchers within and outside of SLU.
