    The BioRobotics & Mechanical Testing Core (BRMTC) provides biomechanical testing of biological structures and biomaterials. Our world-class facilities allow investigators to conduct high-quality research of the mechanical properties of existing biological structures and constructs, as well as to quantify the potential for new technologies and clinical advancements. The BMRTC provides testing capabilities for a wide range of biomechanical modalities and will offer expert advice and support for development of new test protocols, as well as innovative techniques for instrumentation and data collection. Modalities include tissues, joints, and multi-articular units, such as foot or spine segments.

    The Senior Research Engineer assumes responsibility for planning and implementing a variety of complex assignments. Identifies new concepts and coordinates efforts with other engineering specializations. Identifies and resolves complex problems and initiatives and makes recommendations on solutions. Justifies additional research and/or investigation initiatives. Performs independent analysis, investigation, and planning of specific engineering criteria, characteristics and features to meet assignment goals.

    Responsibilities:
    • Does cool things with robots
    • Performs routine engineering investigations in support of current research or product development efforts using engineering software analysis tools.
    • Prepares design sketches or drawings for components, sub-assemblies, processes or equipment using CAD or 3-D solid modeling software.
    • Assists with the design, development, and evaluation of prototype medical devices, equipment, and software.
    • Assists with preparation and evaluation of test protocols and test specimens.
    • Prepares charts, graphs and other documentation in support of articles for publication, project reports and grant applications.
    • Travels to customer facilities and travels to conferences
    • Support domestic and international customers remotely and in-person
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education:
    • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

    Certifications:
    • None required.

    Complexity of Work:
    • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
    • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

    Physical Requirements:
    • Duties may require some bending, lifting, standing, and sitting for long periods.
    • Possible exposure to animal tissue, blood borne pathogens, chemical and biological reagents, and moving mechanical and electrical components.
    • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination also required.

    Personal Protective Equipment:
    • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
