Updated Post: May 27,2023
Position: Forensic Injury Biomechanics - Biomechanical Engineer - Entry Level
Position Description: Vector Scientific, Inc. (VSI) is looking for an entry level candidate who is a recent graduate (MS or PhD) or has 1-3 years of work experience after graduation. Forensic injury biomechanics is an applied science analyzing human dynamics to assess the mechanism of injuries and evaluate causal link between specific injuries and real-world incidents primarily in motor vehicle accidents as well as some industrial/occupational and sport/recreation accidents. The vast majority of the work focuses on occupant dynamics and injury biomechanics in motor vehicle collisions integrating vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, injury mechanics, and restraint system use and effectiveness. There is also some work analyzing industrial/occupational and sport/recreation accidents. The entry level person works in a team with other injury biomechanics staff in support of a senior biomechanist across all aspects of a case including defining the forensic question, case analysis, presenting technical results to the client, and preparing for expert testimony. Tasks include review of documents (police reports, photographs, medical records, deposition testimony), inspect and document evidence (subject and exemplar vehicles, accident sites, safety equipment, etc.), research and apply scientific literature regarding specific injury mechanisms, gather and apply injury field data, integrate vehicle collision dynamics and occupant dynamics, analyze injury mechanisms, reconstruct actual and alternative scenarios, prepare visual presentations, and write technical reports regarding injury biomechanics findings and conclusions. In addition to on the job training there will be continuing education required in the form of both online and in-person technical courses, seminars, and conferences.
Degree Requirements and Qualifications:- Master of Science (MS) or Doctorate PhD) in Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Biomechanics/Kinesiology, or a closely related science with a research focus on injury biomechanics.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; the ability to work independently; self-motivated and self-disciplined; outstanding oral and written communication skills; able to interact effectively with technical and non-technical people; the desire to continue to learn; and the ability to acquire, integrate, and apply knowledge.
- Successful candidates are persons willing to be challenged, roll up their sleeves, think, solve problems, and work as part of our talented team.
- Specialized education and/or research experience in injury biomechanics in motor vehicle collisions is preferred.
