Overview
The Human Performance Lab Research Engineer position is responsible for conducting human performance (biomechanical, physiological) research and testing to evaluate product efficacy and safety; advise on product design; enhance understanding of human and animal movement; and investigate injury causality and product liability in the Rimkus Human Performance Laboratory, located in Atlanta, GA. In addition to research responsibilities, the Research Engineer will manage and maintain the laboratory and related testing capabilities. The Research Engineer will work with Rimkus Experts in sport science, biomechanics, human factors, premises, materials, and toxicology to develop and facilitate research projects related to sports and human performance, ergonomics, gait and slip, trip and fall, and musculoskeletal injury.

Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. There will be periods where overtime will be required, which the employee will need to comply with in order to meet the demands of the position.
Travel Requirements
The Salary Range for this position is $60,000 - $80,000 and is dependent on education, experience, location and certifications/licensure.

The Research Engineer will work with Rimkus Experts in sport science, biomechanics, human factors, premises, materials, and toxicology to develop and facilitate research projects related to sports and human performance, ergonomics, gait and slip, trip and fall, and musculoskeletal injury.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain and manage all laboratory equipment (including optical motion capture system and in-ground force plate) and supplies associated with the Human Performance Laboratory, including regular quality verification of equipment and transport of equipment offsite for remote testing.
- Maintain the laboratory facility, including development and adherence to standard operating procedures.
- Lead scientific research data collections in human/animal biomechanics and athletic performance, including working with the principal investigator to design and pilot study protocols, recruit and coordinate research participants, and train and manage support staff.
- Lead data processing, analysis, management, and reporting, including developing and maintaining procedures and software pipelines for data analysis, management, visualization, and reporting.
- Collaborate with consultants in biomechanics, human factors, premises liability, sport science, biomedical engineering, toxicology, and visual technologies to conduct internal and external (client services) research and product testing.
- Provide summarized data, visualizations, and technical reports to project leaders.
- Develop and execute testing in a timely manner while managing competing priorities.
- Continually improve lab capabilities by assessing/acquiring new equipment and developing new methodology/analytical tools to advance cross-functional initiatives, research agenda, and process optimization.
Additional roles
- Provide technical support to consultants in biomechanics, premises, human factors, sports science, toxicology, and other life sciences, including literature search and review; forensic-related lab testing and other data collection, cleaning, and analysis; and preparation of reports, presentations, and publications.
- Develop and execute novel research ideas that enhance Rimkus's expertise.
- Assist with the development of scientific publications, including manuscripts and conference presentations.
Required Education and Certifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Kinesiology.
Required Skills and Abilities
- 2+ years of experience in laboratory research/testing, including project planning, subject coordination, data collection and cleaning, data management, data analysis, maintaining and managing laboratory equipment.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with proficiency in analyzing complex test data and distilling it into useful information that consultants can use to advise clients.
- Proficient in Python and/or Matlab for the purposes of data cleaning, analysis, and visualization.
- Experience with these types of data: mechanical, biomechanical, anthropometrical, animation, perception, and physiological data.
- Experience with these sensors: three-dimensional motion capture, force plates, IMUS, accelerometers, pressure sensors, and electromyography.
- Experienced with human subject testing, including ethics review and subject recruitment.
- Experience with publishing and presenting scientific research findings.
- Must be creative, detail-oriented, able to prioritize tasks, and work under pressure to successfully meet competing priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from non-technical groups of managers and clients.
- Desire and ability to take risks and to take responsibility for results. Be resourceful, curious, and have a strong intuition to find and solve problems.
- Ability to independently prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines; ability to delegate tasks and seek help.
- Willingness and ability to learn new systems and to implement new processes in response to changes preferred.
