  • PhD position (UK-settlement/presettlement/nationals only) - Gait assessment in Parkinson's Disease - Digital Health Technology

Are you interested in the implementation of digital health technology for neurological disorders?

Here there is a PhD opportunity in the field of signal processing/machine learning to study gait in Parkinson’s Disease. We are looking for a really motivated student to join us at the Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh Campus, UK). The PhD is funded by the CDT training arm of the prestigious Edinburgh Centre for Robotics, a joint venture between Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh, and forming the new National Robotarium, which opened in September 2022. The Robotarium is a world-leading centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, creating innovative solutions to global challenges. The student will have the wonderful opportunity to work at the UK-national Robotarium (https://www.edinburgh-robotics.org/national-robotarium) with professionals in robotics, data analysis, electronics, signals processing, biomechanics and sport sciences. This is a full-time opening for a 4-year PhD scholarship (with a stipendium of 18,622 GB pounds per year, no tuition fees) to work in collaboration with UK and international universities. As part of this project, you will develop objective, cost-effective, valid and novel methods for real-world gait assessment in Parkinson’s Disease with a single wearable sensor. Particularly, we aim to better characterise the effect of anti-parkinsonian medication and progression in Parkinson’s Disease, which in turn, will likely improve its clinical management. A successful candidate is expected to hold a master’s degree with a significant research component in either of biomedical engineering, electronic engineering, computer engineering, data science and robotics. Foundation skills in computer programming (MATLAB or/and Python) and machine learning are essential.
    • Expressions of interest are welcome from UK-nationals and residences with settlement/pre-settlement status.

The expected start is in September/October. Please, apply as soon as possible via the link below:
