We have two researcher positions open in machine learning, image analysis and patient register analysis in osteoporosis and fracture risk research, at the Kuopio University Hospital in The wellbeing services county of North Savo, Finland. We are interested in hiring PhD students or post-doctoral researchers. The location of the positions is Kuopio, Finland and the research is conducted at the Kuopio University Hospital but in the case of a PhD student the dissertation is made for the University of Eastern Finland (UEF).

The researcher will work on a research project funded by the Research Council of Finland and The Wellbeing Services County of North Savo. The project aims at developing new technological, computational, and machine/deep learning-based solutions for diagnostics of osteoporosis and predicting future fractures. in the project, the applicant will develop an in-depth understanding of machine learning, image analysis and patient measurement techniques. The project has a large patient image dataset covering multiple imaging modalities (CT, MRI, DXA and X-ray) collected from several hospitals. In addition, the project has access to patient register data including patient diagnoses, radiological reports, hospital visit information and other patient records. The aim of the whole project is to implement the developed analysis methods in clinical workflow to support clinicians in their daily work related to diagnostics of osteoporosis and fracture risk assessment. The project is multidisciplinary in nature, intrinsically combining parts from medical physics, technology, health informatics, and clinical radiology and physiology. This research project is an excellent opportunity for those interested in an academic career or aiming for a career as a medical physicist. Alongside the Ph.D./post-doctoral project, it is possible to supervise B.Sc. and M.Sc. and in case of post-doctoral researcher PhD students and participate in teaching.

The project can consist of multiple tasks. It is possible to combine Ph.D./Post-doctoral project from different tasks based on the applicant’s previous experience and preferences. The project tasks are:
    1) Machine and deep learning-based data and image analytics
    2) Integrating machine learning techniques to clinical workflow
    3) Exploring large patient image and register datasets
    4) Developing and testing medical devices and novel measurement techniques
    5) Working with patient measurements

    Expected tasks
    - Developing and investigating machine learning methods
    - Analyzing large patient datasets with around 100 000 patients, millions of images and 100 million register records
    - Participating to patient measurements and reporting of results
    - Writing scientific articles and in the case of PhD student the Ph.D. thesis
    - Possibility for teaching and supervision duties
    - Global scientific collaboration with a few months visits in a research laboratory abroad

    Requirements
    - Ph.D. Student/Post-Doctoral researcher: M.Sc/Ph.D in an applicable field or graduation soon (A suitable higher education university degree or graduation in the near future. Doctoral researchers are required to have a doctorate and experience in scientific research or a dissertation in the near future).
    - Studies in medical physics/technology are beneficial
    - Fluency in written and spoken English
    - Programming skills (Python, Matlab) and knowledge of relational databases and SQL are beneficial
    - Experience in neural networks and/or finite element modeling are beneficial
    - The capability to work in a multi-disciplinary international team and good collaboration skills

The work will be carried out at Kuopio University Hospital in the Diagnostic Imaging Center and at the Department of technical physics in University of Eastern Finland. Recruited PhD student will graduate from the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Eastern Finland and university’s research infrastructure is available for the project. Researcher will work in close collaboration with Biophysics of Bone and Cartilage - BBC (https://luotain.uef.fi) and Kuopio Musculoskeletal Research Unit - KMRU (https://sites.uef.fi/kmru/) research groups. The wellbeing services county of North Savo (Pohjois-Savon hyvinvointialue) will be the employer via competitive research funding. The research will be a part of a larger international research collaboration and research visits are possible in multiple different locations (e.g., in Switzerland, Sweden or Great Britain). The research groups belonging this collaboration conduct globally well-renowned research related to improving the diagnostics of osteoporosis and fracture risk.

The positions are filled immediately when the right candidates are found. We accept applications (incl. CV, 1-2 page motivation letter, possible list of publications, and study records if M.Sc. studies are still on-going) via Kuntarekry https://www.kuntarekry.fi/en/jobs/re...ostics-546607/

The duration of the assignment is 1.10.2023 - 31.8.2027. In the project, we follow a trial period of six (6) months.

The salary for PhD student at the beginning of the project is 2 500€/kk, as the dissertation work progresses, it increases to a maximum of 3 250€/kk.
The salary of a research doctor starts at 3 900€/kk and increases to a maximum of 4 120€/kk. When applying, we can consider previous work assignments and salary.
