  • PhD Scholarship in clinical gait analysis and causal inference, Griffith University, Australia

    The Project
Investigating the causes and consequences of atypical gait in children with cerebral palsy.

    The opportunity
We are currently looking for a PhD candidate to partner with our research program that aims to inform personalised clinical management for ambulant children and youth with Cerebral Palsy (CP). The primary focus of this PhD is to design and implement causal inference methodologies to answer unresolved clinical questions related to the treatment of children with CP leveraging data acquired from clinical motion analysis services over the past 10 years. Success in this role requires collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Motion Analysis Group and Gillette Children’s (USA).

    The Team
The PhD project will leverage expertise across two leading research centres at Griffith University, the Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems (IIIS) and the Griffith Centre of Biomedical and Rehabilitation Engineering (GCORE).

The Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems (IIIS) specialises in artificial intelligence, computer vision and robotics. Its ongoing quest to incorporate human behaviours into intelligence devices has secured consistent global recognition and cemented its place as an international leader in the field. Innovative, exploratory, and entrepreneurial, the IIIS develops technologies with real-life applications.

The Griffith Centre of Biomedical and Rehabilitation Engineering (GCORE) is situated within the Menzies Health Institute Queensland at Griffith University. The main research areas of GCORE are neuromusculoskeletal engineering and orthopaedics, with focus on the development and use of disruptive technologies to enable personalised management of chronic and acute health conditions, as well as assess function and performance. The GCORE team is a large cross-disciplinary team comprised of engineers, clinicians, biomedical scientists, industrial designers, and research leaders.

The successful applicant will be based at Griffith University’s Gold Coast Campus, located within the cutting-edge Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. Centrally based and just minutes from world-famous beaches, you’ll be able to enjoy a vibrant, enviable student lifestyle.

    About you

A successful candidate is expected to hold a bachelor’s degree with first-class honours or a master’s degree. These degrees should incorporate a significant research component in data science, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, or related fields. Essential skills include strong knowledge in data science and machine learning, a foundation in biomechanics, and computer programming skills (MATLAB, R, Python or C++).
    • Expressions of interest are welcome from domestic and international applicants.
    • Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelors degree with honours equivalent to first class honours or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a bachelor honours degree or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with Schedule One of the HDR Scholarship Policy. For further information on the eligibility requirements for the program refer here.
