The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is looking for a motivated PhD student to join our team next year. Ongoing projects include research to better understand risk factors for metatarsal bone stress injury in running athletes, and designing exercises to promote bone adaptation. Research projects generally include a mix of working with human research participants, quantitative image analysis, finite element and other computational modeling techniques, and some experimental work (e.g. mechanical testing).
A background in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or similar is required. We also have projects that could benefit from advanced computational skills, so if you have an interest in applying those skills to biomedical problems, this could be a good fit. Candidates from kinesiology / movement science backgrounds may be considered if they have very strong technical skills such as coding/matlab, basic engineering mechanics, matrix/linear algebra, and are willing to work to further develop these skills at an advanced level. The most important characteristic that anyone can have is a sincere interest and enthusiasm about the research we do here.

WPI is a private technical university located in Worcester, MA - about 40 miles west of Boston and a ~1-2 hour drive to lots of great places (Cape Cod, the White Mountains in NH, Providence, RI, skiing in Vermont, etc). Our department and our lab are both great places to be! I highly value an inclusive and collaborative lab environment and culture.
