Funded Ph.D. Studentship in Movement Science with a focus on Cancer Rehabilitation
Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Imaging Laboratory, School of Kinesiology, University of Michigan

There will be 250,000 new patients diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the United States. The treatments used to manage breast cancer have greatly enhanced patient survivorship. However, these same procedures may come at a significant functional cost as patients commonly report shoulder pain, restricted mobility, and difficulty performing activities of daily living. The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Imaging Laboratory at the University of Michigan seeks to understand the mechanisms driving these impairments in breast cancer patients and develop therapeutic strategies that improve post-operative function in women after breast cancer treatment.

We are currently seeking a new, fully funded doctoral student in the School of Kinesiology to study the mechanisms and rehabilitation of shoulder impairments in breast cancer survivors. In particular, we seek a doctoral student who is passionate about expanding the translational scope of this work to improve patient’s lives. Doctoral training will be provided in biomechanical, electromyographic, and ultrasound imaging-based measurements, along with oncology.

The student would work under the supervision of Prof. David Lipps, Ph.D., and have the opportunity to collaborate with oncologists at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. This is a particularly exciting time to join our laboratory as we recently moved into a brand new, start-of-the-art building with dedicated biomechanics research spaces, clinical suites, and training facilities.

Applicants should have a master’s or bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, biomedical engineering, or mechanical engineering (or related fields). Previous biomechanics research experience, journal publications, and a high GPA from previous academic work are highly desirable. GRE scores are not required or accepted. The student will need to gain admittance to the University of Michigan Movement Science doctoral program for Fall 2024. Students are encouraged to submit an application by December 1, 2023 deadline for full consideration of funding. Please get in touch with Prof. Lipps for additional details (dlipps@umich.edu).
