  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering – Biomechanics, Computational Modeling, Muscle-Tendon Structure-Function – Colorado School of Mines

The MyoEngineering Lab at Colorado School of Mines is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic PhD student to join our team in Fall 2024. Our research uses engineering principles to explain fundamental biomechanics of multiscale muscle design needed to solve problems that will improve human mobility, health, and performance. We apply our mechanical engineering expertise to myology, the study of muscle structure-function, to discover how differences in muscle design related to exercise, injury, sex, and age influences mobility performance. New PhD student will work on projects to create detailed computer simulations of complex muscle structures and to design experiments to measure human biomechanics and physiology to inform and test model predictions.

Required qualifications: A background in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, or similar - candidates with kinesiology/sports medicine backgrounds may be considered if they demonstrate strong technical skills and/or a willingness to develop them. This position requires strong organization, excellent written and oral communication, enthusiasm for problem solving, and curiosity for muscle/tendon structure-function.

    Preferred qualifications:
Technical skills/experience: CAD, FEA, basic engineering mechanics, linear algebra, image processing, programming in Matlab/Python/etc.; knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics

Colorado School of Mines is a small public STEM university located in Golden Colorado, just outside of Denver. Golden is a great place to live with access to the resources of a large city and to outdoor activities in the Rocky Mountains! The MyoEngineering Lab is in the Mechanical Engineering Department and part of a highly collaborative Biomechanics group. You can find more info about Biomechanics at Mines here: https://mechanical.mines.edu/biomechanics/

The deadline to apply to the ME graduate program is December 15th 2023, and you can find the application information here: https://mechanical.mines.edu/graduate-program/
