  • 3 year funded Post-doc, University of Essex (UK) - Computational modelling of hip and knee joint replacements - 1Jun 2024

    Hi all,

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow, willing to work at the intersection of clinical biomechanics, musculoskeletal modelling, and biotribology. The candidate will be working on a three-year (36 month) funded project by the Medical Research Council, UK, looking at the safety of various physical exercises on the bone and implant health after hip and knee replacements.

You will be based at the University of Essex, Colchester Campus. The team is made up of Dr Bernard Liew (physiotherapist, biomechanist), Professor Nelson Cortes (biomechanist), and Dr Wenxing Guo (statistician) from the University of Essex; Mr Stephen McDonnell (orthopaedic surgeon) from the University of Cambridge, and Dr Leiming Gao (biotribology) from Nottingham Trent University. There is an overseas co-investigator, Professor Stefan Maas from the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg. There is an industry project partner, JRI Orthopaedics.

The University of Essex is equipped with two state-of-art biomechanics laboratories – one laboratory houses a 14 camera Vicon system with 2 in-ground force plates, and another houses a 9 camera Vicon system with an instrumented treadmill. In addition, we have 16 EMG and 16 IMU Noraxon systems, 7 IMeasureU sensors.

There will be numerous opportunities for professional growth and development in this project, including funded conference attendances, funded training and knowledge exchange stints at Nottingham Trent University, JRI Orthopaedics, and Luxembourg, opportunities for leading patient and public engagement groups, leading public and dissemination press activities, research supervision, to name a few.

    Criteria
    Essential:
    • PhD (or nearing completion) in the field of mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or a related discipline.
    • Experience and knowledge of hip and/or knee joint replacements
    • Experience and knowledge of lubrication and wear modelling
    • Experience in FEA and CFD simulations preferably in ANSYS
    • Experience in programming preferable Matlab or Fortran.
    • Finite element modelling, material modelling, computer programming (e.g. C++, Matlab, Python)
    Preferred:
    • Motion capture with surface electromyography data collection skills (e.g. Vicon, Qualisys)
    • Experience in working with human participants
    • Experience in commercial or non-commercial musculoskeletal modelling software (e.g. OpenSim, AnyBody)

Start date: Negotiable but no later than 1 June 2024 due to funder requirements.
    Duration: 3 years (full time)
    Location: Colchester Campus, Essex, UK
