  • Applied Biomechanics Engineer, New York Mets (Citi Field, NY, USA)

    Job Description:

    Summary:
The New York Mets Applied Biomechanics Engineer (BMA) will lead the innovation, development, and application of biomechanics-related tools across pitching, hitting, and performance departments. The Biomechanics Engineer will be responsible for applying a strong understanding of mathematical techniques of 3D dynamics, inverse dynamics, inverse kinematics, and musculoskeletal modeling towards algorithm and software development. Based out of Citi Field, the Biomechanics Engineer will work directly with the Major League Clubhouse staff and players to provide on-the-ground support and triage questions related to biomechanics. The Biomechanics Engineer will also work closely with the Performance Technology team to develop insightful data visualizations and biomechanics reports. The ideal candidate has worked within a professional sports organization with a track record of developing and applying sustainable, reliable, and effective biomechanics tools.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Lead the innovation and development of novel biomechanics algorithms applied to baseball pitching, hitting, and performance assessments using optical motion capture, markerless motion capture, and force plates.
    • Apply standardized and emerging musculoskeletal and fatigue models to disparate raw and processed datasets for the purpose of player workload management.
    • Work closely with Sports Science, Scouting, Player Development, Coaching, and Analytics departments to apply biomechanics principles across the organization.
    • Work with the Mets’ Data Engineering team to scale data processing and biomechanics algorithms to production environments.
    • Work closely with the Performance Technology team to develop front-end biomechanics reports in hard-copy and web-friendly formats.
    • Assist the Performance Technology team with study design, statistical analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data mining and experimental research.
    • Assist in biomechanics lab data collection sessions and travel to the Mets’ Florida Complex seasonally as needed.

    Qualifications:
    • B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technology field.
    • Previous experience working in a clinical, elite sport, or industrial biomechanics lab, consisting of marker-based motion capture equipment, force plates, and EMG.
    • Highly proficient in mathematical techniques of 3D dynamics, inverse dynamics, inverse kinematics, and musculoskeletal modeling.
    • Highly proficient in at least three (3) of the following programming languages: Matlab, C, C++, Python, R, Javascript
    • Highly proficient in algorithm development and validation across large motion capture datasets.
    • Previous experience with scripting biomechanics data visualization reports with large motion capture datasets.
    • Previous experience with experimental study design and advanced statistical analysis.
    • Previous experience working with and developing musculoskeletal models from holistic human performance datasets (including range-of-motion, strength, speed, and workload information).
    • Strong communication and presentation skills (graphical, written, and verbal).
    • Previous experience with deep learning and computer vision algorithm development a plus.
    • Previous experience with signal processing of raw sensor data a plus (IMU, GPS, HR, etc.)
