We are accepting applications for funded Ph.D. positions in the Rehabilitation Sciences degree program with a concentration in movement science and disorders at East Carolina University for Fall 2025. The Rehabilitation Sciences doctoral program emphasizes training for research. It is best described as an "apprenticeship" program in which students work closely with a faculty member who has agreed to provide mentorship toward the development of research, scholarship, and independent thinking skills. Students are involved in research from the outset, and are expected to conduct research leading to empirical, methodological, and/or theoretical advances in their field of study. Students accepted into the program will receive a competitive stipend and the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary group of researchers who study the intersection of neuro- and biomechanics through both mechanistic and translational investigations across the lifespan.
Competitive applicants will have a master’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution in physical therapy, athletic training, engineering, biomechanics, movement sciences or related area. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify a major professor as a first step in the application process. Faculty mentors in the Movement Sciences and Disorders concentration have research priorities ranging from applied research in bone and joint health, sensory integration, virtual reality applications for balance and postural control, pediatrics and neuroplasticity, and gait optimization following limb loss, to bench research in neuroscience and muscle physiology. The profiles of faculty members in the Movement Sciences and Disorders concentration can be found at: https://cahs.ecu.edu/RehabPhD/about-us/faculty/ and https://sites.ecu.edu/hmal/.
Materials needed at the time of application include three letters of recommendation (at least two from faculty of previously attended institutions), a scholarly writing sample, and a personal statement. A GRE score is not needed for application to the Movement Sciences and Disorders concentration. For further information about this opportunity please visit the Rehabilitation Science Ph.D. degree program at https://cahs.ecu.edu/RehabPhD/ or contact the Movement Sciences & Disorders Concentration Director, Dr. John Willson directly at willsonj@ecu.edu.
