  • PhD Assistantship in Applied Biomechanics – University of Memphis, Fall 2025

The Exercise, Sport and Movement Sciences (ESMS) unit in the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at The University of Memphis invites applications for a fully funded PhD assistantship in Applied Biomechanics with Dr. Shelby Peel, starting Fall 2025.

The assistantship may include a combination of research within the Musculoskeletal Analysis Laboratory and instruction of undergraduate courses (e.g., Anatomic Kinesiology, Biomechanics Lab, Lab Techniques, etc...). The assistantship is a 12-month appointment and includes a monthly stipend (yearly stipend increase; and possible additional compensation available for teaching during summer months) and a full tuition waiver for the entire program period (three to five years, depending on prior experience/training).

Research Details: The focus of the research will be on ACL injury mechanisms, modifiable lower extremity injury risk variables, and overall female athlete musculoskeletal health. Applicants with prior research experience in musculoskeletal biomechanics and familiarity with biomechanics research instruments, coding (e.g., MATLAB, R), and data analysis are highly encouraged to apply. Experience in study management, participant recruitment, and IRB protocols is preferred. Strong communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to work independently are essential.

INTERESTED STUDENTS: To apply, email your CV and a cover letter detailing your Master’s degree experience (e.g., thesis project, institution, advisor), biomechanics lab skills, research experience (e.g., project management, writing, presentations), and future career goals to Dr. Shelby Peel at sapeel@memphis.edu.
