    The College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville invites nominations and applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation. We are seeking candidates who demonstrate both synergy with existing teaching strengths and a commitment to teaching excellence.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Exercise Science; serving on theses, dissertations, and honors projects committees; mentor/advise both undergraduate and graduate students; presenting at professional conferences; and providing service to the department, college, university, community, and profession.

    Minimum Qualifications: 1) Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Exercise Science or related field conferred by start of employment, 2) Evidence or promise of highly effective teaching, 3) Evidence or potential of service to the department, institution, and profession

    Preferred Qualifications: 1) Experience working in clinical exercise physiology, biomechanics or closely related field, 2) Experience of teaching biomechanics, exercise psychology, functional anatomy, behavior change, or exercise administration/management at the university level, 3) Evidence of effective student mentoring/advising, 4) Experience or interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning

    Appointment and Salary: This is a 9-month, non-tenure-track position at the teaching assistant professor rank. The salary will commensurate with education and experience. The anticipated start date is August 11, 2025.

    The Exercise Science Program: The Exercise Science program is housed in the College of Education and Health Professions (COEHP) and offers B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees. The Exercise Science program has a strong reputation for having quality students, high standards, and a student-centered faculty. The faculty in the Exercise Science Program are committed to providing experiential opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, including research mentoring and interdisciplinary collaborations in the Exercise Science Research Center. Exercise Science is one of the fastest growing programs on the campus and is one of the largest majors with approximately 957 undergraduates and 58 graduate students (M.A.T., M.S., Ph.D.). Our students represent a diverse background with academic interests in exercise physiology, biomechanics, athletic training, and many pre-professional programs (e.g., physical therapy, medicine, occupational therapy, dentistry, etc.). The Exercise Science faculty has successfully collaborated with faculty in Nursing, Biological Science, Animal Science, Food Science, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, Computer Science, Poultry Science, Anthropology, and Environmental Life Sciences. Additionally, there is a track record for collaborations with University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (Little Rock and Northwest campuses) and Arkansas Children’s Hospital (Little Rock and Northwest AR).     University and Location: The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville serves as the major center of liberal and professional education and as the primary land-grant campus in the state with ~31,000 students. The University is Arkansas’ major source of theoretical and applied research and the provider of a wide range of public services to people throughout the state and nation. The Carnegie Foundation categorizes the University of Arkansas as a research institution with “very high research activity,” placing the University among the top 162 universities nationwide and in a class by itself within the state of Arkansas. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University among the top tier of institutions of higher education as well as one of the top ten national “Up-and-Comers” of public universities. Fayetteville is located in the northwest corner of the state with an approximate population of 85,000 residents. The city and area have been featured in numerous publications as a very desirable and economical place to live and recently was listed by Money magazine as one of the “100 Best Places to Live.” Outside Magazine ranked the University of Arkansas as one of its “top 25 outdoor colleges” due to proximity to Buffalo National River, Beaver Lake, state parks, and regional trails and greenways.

    The University of Arkansas, in “the Natural State,” is situated in the Ozark Mountains and recently became the biking capital of the country. It hosts numerous national and international bike races (Joe Martin Stage Race, US Pro Cup, UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup, etc.) on various trail types including almost 500 miles in northwest Arkansas trail system. Additionally, the University’s department of University Recreation Outdoors is developing additional trails and programs that build on the existing community outdoor opportunities. There is also a wealth of indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities including climbing, cycling (road, mountain, gravel), kayaking (white and flat water) hiking, camping, and trail running.
