We seek a highly-motivated candidate for our open PhD position to work on the MUSCLE3D project.
In MUSCLE3D, the goal is to understand how human muscles change shape in three dimensions when they contract. As we currently lack any method to measure three-dimensional (3D) muscle shape changes during contraction, this project proposes an imaging innovation to assess the 3D nature of muscle contraction. As part of this PhD project, you will advance current measurement techniques by combining two-dimensional ultrasound imaging and 3D motion capture. The PhD candidate is expected to develop the method and test it against current standards (e.g., freehand 3D ultrasound imaging) and write code (Matlab/Python) for 3D muscle shape reconstruction. The successful candidate will perform neuromechanical experiments on healthy human adults and will learn how to collect, analyse, and interpret multifaceted biomechanical data.
