  • Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Vermont Starting Fall 2025 (Burlington, VT, USA)

The Musculoskeletal Imaging and Orthopaedic Biomechanics (MIOB) Laboratory at the University of Vermont is seeking a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering to start August 2025. The student will contribute to an NSF-funded project with an overarching goal to improve subject-specific finite-element models of joint mechanics. The student will incorporate image-based measurements of articular cartilage’s microstructure into a new subject-specific finite-element modeling framework, as well as inform/benchmark the modeling framework using in situ viscoelastic tests. The incoming student will receive a stipend in the form of research and teaching assistantships as well as a tuition waiver. Please send your questions/CV/resume to the MIOB Lab Director at niccolo.fiorentino@uvm.edu.

    Laboratory Overview:
The overarching goal of the MIOB Lab is to improve human health and performance for those who suffer from musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions. MIOB Lab techniques consist of magnetic resonance imaging for musculoskeletal morphometry, quantitative MR metrics for assessing tissue composition, high-speed x-ray imaging for dynamic bone motion, and computational modeling for articular soft tissue mechanics. The MIOB Lab works in close collaboration with researchers in engineering, orthopedics, and rehabilitation science.

    Requirements and Qualifications:
Applicants are expected to have received a B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Bioengineering (additional disciplines will be considered on a case-by-case basis). Applicants demonstrating relevant research experiences, competitive academic record, excellent communication skills, and/or data acquisition/processing skills will be prioritized. Students with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. As required by the Graduate College, students whose native language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency.
