    The University of Washington Performance Research Lab is hiring a full-time research engineer to help conduct sport-related research and instrumented athlete assessments. This is a unique to position to join a team of applied scientists working closely with sport industry partners and collegiate athletic programs. The research engineer will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with engineers, kinesiologists, sport scientists, athletic medicine clinicians, coaches, and athletes (youth to elite). The research engineer will have the opportunity to develop and execute novel research ideas and methods that enhance the teams’ expertise in applied sport science. This position requires in-person work; candidates should expect to be on-campus or at testing facilities at least 3 days per week. Other work can be done remotely as desired.

    The ideal candidate will have a passion for sports and a drive to innovate and advance athlete assessment and monitoring techniques and technology. We are looking for someone who is resourceful, curious, and has a strong intuition to find and solve problems.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Lab Operations
    • Establish standard operating procedures and training resources.
    • Manage laboratory equipment and testing devices, which includes regular quality verification of equipment and transport of equipment for any offsite testing.
    • Advance lab capability and efficiency by assessing/integrating new equipment and/or developing new methods/analytical tools.

      Data Collection & Processing
    • Lead data collections for research projects and athlete assessments, which includes working with the principal investigator to design and pilot study protocols, recruit and coordinate research participants and/or athletes, and train and manage support staff.
    • Lead data processing, analysis, management, and reporting, including developing and refining procedures/software pipelines for data analysis, management, visualization, and reporting.

      Dissemination
    • Provide summarized data, visualization, and technical reports.
    • Assist with scientific dissemination, including development of scientific manuscripts, conference presentations, and community outreach.

      MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    • Bachelor degree in Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Kinesiology, or similar.
    • Two years of experience in laboratory research/testing, including project planning, subject coordination, data collection and cleaning, data management, data analysis, maintaining and managing laboratory equipment.

      Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

      DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Master’s or PhD.
    • Two or more years of experience.
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a proficiency to analyze complex test data and distill it into useful information that coaches and clinicians can use for athlete management.
    • Proficient in Python and/or Matlab for the purposes of data cleaning, analysis, and visualization.
    • Experience with these types of data: mechanical, biomechanical, anthropometrical, imaging, perception, and physiological data.
    • Experience with these types of equipment/devices: three-dimensional motion capture, force plates, IMUs, accelerometers, pressure sensors, electromyography, surface scanners.
    • Experienced with human subject testing, including ethics review and subject recruitment.
    • Experience with publishing and presenting scientific research findings and/or generating reports.
    • Creative, detail oriented, able to prioritize tasks and work under pressure to successfully meet competing priorities and deadlines.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from non-technical groups (athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists).
    • Desire and ability to take risks, and to take responsibility for results.
    • Ability to independently prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines; ability to delegate tasks and seek help.
    • Willingness and ability to learn new systems and to implement new processes in response to changes.
